Steam Powered Giraffe San Jose Theatre reviews
Bad Asses
"Modest Mouse thundered into the night with Shannon and The Clams and Steam Powered Giraffe, a clever line up. My daughter and I really stand up, everyone was entertained during the show. SaTC's early rock influence was a particular thrill, which we hadn't delved into much until this short introduction. Modest Mouse, especially with Isaac Brock not feeling well, had a short, straight, brief line up with Dashboard really being the only major popular demand song, but everything was tight. I know a lot of folks don't like the meandering whimsical drifting in and out of songs, a trade mark of their music, which I consider. I missed that, but I'm the guy that goes looking for the hidden and missing tracks of Mr. Brock. They really were spectacular and made my 20-year-old daughter super excited and happy to see them. The Lonesome Crowded West is our fave, we got a taste, Good News is probably more popular with those around us. We were down in the front floor seating, were told to sit down because there were about 2-3 rows of us on our feet dancing. Not possible, sorry to the section behind us. Speaking of being on your feet, was ANYONE sitting down for any of Steam Powered Giraffe? I don't think so. Man, I've been going to their shows awhile now, they have been my kids' introduction band to the music and concert scene. Their music is a big part of our life between listening to the old early tracks and jamming down the highway singing their songs together. My favorite part of the shows is when Dan walks over to Patrick and they begin to play into each other. There was more of that than the last tour, so hey, I'm happy. Even with some very slight technical tuning issues and the fact that it was the Tacoma Dome, which sucks some of the life out of the sound there, that bass drum still pounds into your bones. Maybe because I'm getting older, the newer material takes longer to grow on me. I had kinda sort of dismissed Turn Blue as a mediocre album, but Fever had a new sound to me. I need to re-listen to that album and not dismiss it so easily. Tickets were worth what we paid, and my preference is to not see them in the dome again."
